James Kamathi Graduates From High School November 2015

He’s quiet. He’s respectful, dependable and smart. That’s why you probably have never heard of our son James Kamathi. He’s been with us 8 years but we have hardly mentioned him because he’s been so easy to have around. When we would show his picture, several people in America asked if he was really just a kid because his face was so serious that at 14 he looked like a man. Today he actually looks younger now because he has learned to trust God. He no longer wonders where he will sleep or when his next meal will be.
This year is James’ year to shine. He will graduate from high school in November. After graduation James plans on working somewhere in Meru town and saving money to pay for teacher’s college. There he will major in history or business education that will qualify him to teach high school. Whatever he does, James will always be grateful that our partners at Heart of God Kenya gave him an opportunity to grow up in a safe, Christ-centered home. Thank You.

With His Quick Wit and Big Glistening Eyes Muza Could Wiggle His Way Out of Anything

With His Quick Wit and Big Glistening Eyes Muza Could Wiggle His Way Out of Anything

For over 10 years now Muthee has brought laughter as well as challenges to Mike and me. With his quick wit and big glistening eyes, he could wiggle his way out of any trouble or form of work. The bars on our windows may have kept the thieves out but Muthee could easily swarm his way through them anytime he wished. Just about the time he exasperated us and we wanted to kick him out, his BIG smile would melt our hearts and Papa would give him ‘just one more chance’. Then last year, around Christmas time, Muthee slipped out into the night and got involved in a serious crime. The kids he was with were all arrest but for some reason our village chief just warned Muthee. Ooooh how Papa Mike wanted to chase him off but then again he knew it would break our hearts to kick him out so he stayed ‘just one more time’. To our surprise, this last year Muthee has finally changed! Every night he’s inside, though not always on time. He’s often asked to speak at the Christian Union in his public high school. He’s a valued team player on the soccer field. And he’s the best interpreter for Papa in Kenya because he thinks like Papa Mike.
In the Good News Bible I Corinthians 13 verses 6 and 7 read,” though love is not happy with evil…………….love never gives up, and its faith, hope and patience never fails.” God never gives up on us and we pray that He gives you the strength in 2015 to give that challenge in your life ‘just one more chance.’

These BIG GIANTS are our Neighboors

These BIG GIANTS are our Neighboors

These giants live only 15 minutes away from us. African elephants grow to be over 13 ft tall and weigh up to 17 tons. Big! Beautiful! And dangerous! Elephants kill more than 10 people in Kenya every month So when our boys called today, telling us the elephants were by the electric fence, we dropped everything and ran up to see them. WOW! What a sight! And the fence made it possible to get really close.
The last time we were this close on purpose was in 2005 and there wasn’t a fence protecting us. That day while we were gazing on these giants, a man started throwing sticks at them, hit a baby and immediately Papa Elephant charged. Everyone ran faster than lightning to get away but Mike and I couldn’t outrun Papa Elephant. So Mike threw me behind a tree with the intention of getting the charging giant to chase him. However Papa Elephant was too near. Without thinking Mike commanded, “In the name of Jesus, STOP”. And it did. We are alive today because Mike took authority over the charging giant.
God gave each believer authority over the giants that come charging at us. So whether your giant is sickness, finances or elephants be encouraged because when you command the giants in Jesus name, in faith believing, the giants have to STOP.
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them…”If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed you shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”

Grief Fear and Death were Strangling Me

Grief Fear and Death were Strangling Me

We watched as the gripping claws of fear and grief were strangling the life out of our neighbor. Joyce had watched in shock as her husband’s precious blood poured out after being stabbed by his co-worker and friend. There was No explanation given for their vicious fight and no hope of ever finding out the truth for Makathimo’s (Joyce’s husband) murderer had received Meru justice. Within minutes a mob gathered, stoning the murderer and burning his body. All Joyce knew was now she faced life without her husband. Day by day shadows grew darker as Death continued screaming and clawing, yet Joyce mustered the strength to survive for the sake of her 3 children. From time to time we at HOGK helped Joyce out with security around her house for as a young widow she had become open prey to thieves and other criminals. When our cook quit and someone suggested we hire Joyce, we doubted that she had enough strength for the back-straining toil of cooking for 28 children and our staff especially since we cook outside over an open fire all the time. However we knew that: Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 1:27 So we hired Joyce but within weeks found that she was indeed too weak to carry firewood and water for our huge family. But now the problem was we were falling in love with this quiet lady and she was gaining confidence and renewed hope as she attended morning Bible Study so we hesitated to fire her. Discovering that Joyce taught Sunday School, we asked her to teach math and Swahili to our kids. She’s a great teacher and now has taught at Heart of God for several years. Joyce is also a NEEMA Bible College Graduate and has begun translating in some of our village schools. Joyce spends her evening and week-end encouraging others that with God’s help they too can overcome life’s challenges.

NEEMA Graduate Bishop Patroba Goes and Doesn’t Count the Cost

NEEMA Graduate Bishop Patroba Goes and Doesn’t Count the Cost

Patrobus Preaching 2Patrobus Preaching 2Mat 28:19-20 Go, then to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.”
Go…Teach…Baptize. These was Jesus’ last words before ascending to His Father. And according to history all of his disciples did just that. They went boldly into all the known world spreading the good news of God’s incredible love. They didn’t count the cost but they went and all of us today are products of their obedience.
NEEMA graduate Bishop Patrobus (board member of Heart of God Kenya) doesn’t count the cost either. He just goes. He goes preaching the gospel and setting people free whether he goes into Kabira- Nairobi’s biggest slum of over 1,000,000 people or the tiny village of Lukosi. Patroba preaches to drunks as well as Member of Parliament declaring that Jesus came to set them free of their sin and death.
Mat 10:9 Do not carry any gold, silver, or copper money in your pockets;
Mat 10:10 do not carry a beggar’s bag for the trip or an extra shirt or shoes or a walking stick. Workers should be given what they need.

Many times Patroba leaves on foot believing that God will get him wherever he needs to go. His car is an old junker and constantly in need of repair. Once he wrote asking us to pray for him and his wife’s backs as they pushed their car several meters before it started. Then God miraculously provided a new battery.
The results of such obedience over 600 people surrendered their lives to Christ in the last 6months.

Only Jesus Can Help My Mama

Only Jesus Can Help My Mama

“You see my mama has AIDS and without a Jesus miracle, she will be gone(dead). No money, no school, no medicine can save her but Jesus can! Our Pastor tells us that Jesus can fix anything.”

That’s right, Little John John will be an orphan shortly unless his mama turns to Jesus and is healed from AIDS. John John’s pastor discovered that God loves people. But for years Pastor Sorita has thought that through preaching the Law of Moses that his people maybe could have a chance to please God enough to go to Heaven when they died. Through NEEMA Bible College classes he started renewing his own mind and accepting God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. Now Pastor Sorita has a gospel of hope to share with his people. Their lives are changing and they are beginning to believe that God’s blessings are for today.

Pray that Mama John John accepts the free gift of hope that only Jesus can offer.

Naphtayli Murega

Naphtayli Murega

One morning as Mike was leaving to search for one of our boys who had ran away, the Holy Spirit told me, “behind the hospital”. Mike found the run-away and was heading home when a man asked him to help another kid who was sleeping in the school behind the hospital. Recalling what the Spirit had said, Mike decided to go and investigate, Naphtayli sure enough was leaving the school”behind the hospotal’ where the night watchman was letting him sleep. Mike brought Naftayli home and he’s been a blessing ever since that day in 2007.
Naftayli is an energetic teenager who is always willing to help. Although he’s quiet, he’s a born-leader who can build team spirit and rally other kids to get help him get the job done. School often challenges him; but he is serious about his studies and overcomes the problems.
Last year 2014 Naphtayli’s uncle offered to send him to high school so Naphtayli moved in with his uncle. When Naphtayli came back to visit, we knew something was wrong but we didn’t say anything However later we found out that Naphtayli’s uncle was practicing witchcraft in the home where our son Naphtayli was staying. Sometimes Naphtayli couldn’t sleep with all the screaming and demonic activities going on. You see his uncle was calling upon the spirits of the dead to bless his business activities. That although he was a Christian deacon on Sunday, he required “more power” to prosper.
Well long story short, we found a safe place for Naphtayli to live while he finished the school in 2013, then he moved back with us. As soon as we get the money to send him to high school, he will go and repeat 9th grade while living in our Holy Spirit filled home where he will be safe.
