Grief Fear and Death were Strangling Me

We watched as the gripping claws of fear and grief were strangling the life out of our neighbor. Joyce had watched in shock as her husband’s precious blood poured out after being stabbed by his co-worker and friend. There was No explanation given for their vicious fight and no hope of ever finding out the truth for Makathimo’s (Joyce’s husband) murderer had received Meru justice. Within minutes a mob gathered, stoning the murderer and burning his body. All Joyce knew was now she faced life without her husband. Day by day shadows grew darker as Death continued screaming and clawing, yet Joyce mustered the strength to survive for the sake of her 3 children. From time to time we at HOGK helped Joyce out with security around her house for as a young widow she had become open prey to thieves and other criminals. When our cook quit and someone suggested we hire Joyce, we doubted that she had enough strength for the back-straining toil of cooking for 28 children and our staff especially since we cook outside over an open fire all the time. However we knew that: Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 1:27 So we hired Joyce but within weeks found that she was indeed too weak to carry firewood and water for our huge family. But now the problem was we were falling in love with this quiet lady and she was gaining confidence and renewed hope as she attended morning Bible Study so we hesitated to fire her. Discovering that Joyce taught Sunday School, we asked her to teach math and Swahili to our kids. She’s a great teacher and now has taught at Heart of God for several years. Joyce is also a NEEMA Bible College Graduate and has begun translating in some of our village schools. Joyce spends her evening and week-end encouraging others that with God’s help they too can overcome life’s challenges.
